Things Are Looking Up

As the sweet summer days turn into autumn nights, my family and I made our annual pilgrimage to  Michigan.

The northern regions, that is.  AKA, MAGA land.

It's hard to understand, much less explain, how a country so great could produce a political movement so hideous and hateful. And yet...

Just two years ago, in the countdown to the 2024 presidential elections, the roads of northern Michigan were lined with signs and flags--yes, these dumbasses flew Trump flags--proclaiming the homeowners' allegiance to King Donny.

Someone even flew a Confederate flag--though Michigan had been very much a union state. You know, when the Civil War was actually waging.

But it was just MAGA's way of letting everyone know what their movement is all about. 

This time around?

I'm happy to report not a Trump sign in sight. The Confederate flag was also gone. Okay, okay, so the Big Potato Head's not on the midterm ballots. But I didn't even see a sign for one of his flunkies--like Rogers, the Trump stooge running for U.S. Senator.

I actually saw a sign pushing the Democratic Party. It looked like this...

And then I saw a house with signs and flags that blew my mind. I had to turn the car around and drive back for a second look to make sure it was for real. And it was.

One sign said: “Trump supporters get fucked, stay fucked.”

Another said: “Resist fascism--do no comply with white Christian nationalism.”

And my favorite said: “Fuck Trump--no, fuck you for voting for him.”

The proprietor was sitting on his front porch. A cantankerous-looking grizzled white guy, staring defiantly at me as if to say...

You don't like it? Kiss my ass.

I half expected him to pull out a fully-loaded shotgun from beneath his rocking chair.

But I raised my fist and said, right on. Just to let him know, I was on his side.

Not sure what to make of it. If I were a pollster, I'd say the sample size is too small to make any solid projections.

But I think we'll all agree it's a vast improvement over that Confederate flag.

Maybe Michigan’s finally coming to its senses regarding the asshole it elected.

Here’s hoping the rest of the country soon follows.
